University hospitals welcome NHS England’s Urgent and Emergency Care Review
13 November 2013
The Association of UK University Hospitals (AUKUH), consisting of 44 of the UK’s largest and busiest hospitals, today welcomes the End of Phase 1 Report of the Urgent and Emergency Care Review, led by Sir Bruce Keogh.
The Report provides a compelling and considered vision for the future of urgent and emergency services in England. Restructuring emergency services to suit different degrees of emergency will, if implemented with the understanding of the public, ensure that patients can quickly receive the care most appropriate to their circumstances. This will drive up the quality of patient care while encouraging the most effective use of NHS resources.
This proposal to institute two levels of emergency service and focus ‘Major Emergency’ care in centres of expertise is one grounded in strong clinical evidence. University hospitals have existing experience of delivering specialised clinical services that map on to academic interest and clinical expertise: 19 of the 22 major Trauma centres in England involve AUKUH members. University hospitals will work to add the benefits of their experience and their co-location of academic expertise, facilities and clinical staff.
AUKUH believes that improving patients’ capacity for self-care and always providing clear, reliable advice are paramount in alleviating pressure on services, empowering patients and improving clinical outcomes. We have previously supported these principles in our response to an Independent Commission on Whole Person Care Inquiry.
Sir Ron Kerr, Chair of AUKUH, said:
‘The NHS is facing great challenges in addressing our population’s increasingly complex health needs. To this end the Association fully supports the recommendations of the Report and believes that providing people with better support for self-care, ensuring that urgent care advice is delivered in the right place at the right time, and placing highly responsive care services outside of hospitals will together work to address the urgent and emergency health needs of a growing and changing population’.
